‘Tis the Season for Festive Holiday Décor

I’ve finally come out of my turkey-induced coma, which means there’s been a lot of Christmas décor flying around my house lately. Right around this time each year, visions of sugar plums and never-ending décor ideas start dancing through my head. I could do this and that and I could make this and glitter-glue that. But when I start decorating, I always find myself sticking to a handful of tried-and-true principles to spruce up my home.
Don’t Be Afraid to DIY
With two preschoolers, we have no shortage of construction paper chains lying around our house…especially at this time of year! Inspiration struck me one night as I was trying to come up with something different for our tree garland. Why not make my own chains with ribbon? I grabbed some wired metallic ribbon in different patterns, cut them into short lengths and hot glued them together. Ta da – my adult version of the classic construction paper chain! They store easily and, because I used wire ribbon, the links retain their shape even after being squished into a bin for most of the year. This is a super easy project that the kids can even help with… just watch the hot glue!
Trees, Trees, Everywhere
Since we only get to enjoy Christmas trees for a little over a month each year, I take advantage of this time of the year and put up multiple trees. That said, I’m usually tired of decorating after the tree in our living room is finished. So my family divides and conquers. We all pitch in on our main tree, which includes all the fun and meaningful ornaments we’ve collected over the years. The kids are in charge of the playroom tree and get to decorate it with whatever they want. This year, I found free printable gift tags online that they colored and cut out themselves. We used bakery twine to hang them on their own “kid tree.” Their favorite part of this process? Using the hole punch! And finally, I put a skinny pencil tree in our den and, instead of ornaments, I used swaths of ribbon to make it festive. This tree is backed into a corner, so I cut the ribbon to tuck into the front and sides and opted not to decorate the back – I’m all for saving time and supplies!
Sneak In Some Surprises
I’m always looking for new and different ways to use décor pieces that I already have. These lanterns are on my hearth year-round and usually hold candles. But during the Christmas season, they’re home to a miniature village. These glittery little houses light up and look oh-so-charming displayed in the lanterns…they’re almost like oversized snow globes!
Find Joy in Past Memories and in Creating New Ones
The number one thing I try to keep top of mind is that things don’t have to be perfect. I find so much joy in past memories of the season and in the excitement of creating new ones each year. So I try not to stress over my to-do list or holiday entertaining or decorating or those last 8 gifts I have to buy. Instead, I think back on the special things I remember from Christmases as a kid and try to create opportunities for my kids to enjoy the magic of the season.
