Holiday DIY: Copper Wire Gift Tags and Ornaments

The holidays are officially upon us…how did that happen so fast?! As much as I love giving gifts, one of my favorite things to do is wrap the gifts. I’m a sucker for ribbons, bows, cute tags and other adornments that make a package look extra special! I came up with a quick and easy gift tag idea that I’m planning on using for a lot of my gifts this year. With a couple minor adjustments, this tag could also be used as an ornament. Check it out below and get creative in gifting to all the special people on your list this year!
Assemble Your Supplies
You won’t need a whole lot to create these simple gift tags/ornaments – a few lengths of copper wire (I used some leftover electrical wire we had in the garage and just stripped the rubber coating off), some fun decorations (mini pine cones, faux greenery, snowflakes, etc), ribbon and a hot glue gun.
Roll Your Wire
Decide how big around you want your copper circles to be. I used a paper towel tube to wrap my wire lengths around multiple times. I used pretty thick wire, so I wrapped it around three times. If you’re using thinner wire, you may want to wrap it around a bunch of times! You don’t want each loop to line up perfectly…fan them out a bit so you can see each loop and add a little dimension to your ornament. You can twist the two ends together to close your loop or, if the wire is too thick, you can glue them together with the hot glue gun.
Add Some Seasonal Elements
Once your loops are made, use the hot glue gun to attach some fun seasonal elements. For example, I picked up some cute mistletoe felt garland from the Dollar Spot at Target. I clipped a stem of leaves off and wound it around my copper loop, letting the leaves hang down in the circle. I also found some mini pine cones at a craft store (they had the cutest wooden snowflakes, too!) and glued those to another one of my copper loops.
The Ornament Route
To make an ornament, cut a small piece of ribbon and simply tie to the top of the loop (you can glue it in place if you don’t want it sliding around the loop). From there, all you have to do is find a tree to hang it on – an easy ornament that’s simple, but special!
The Gift Tag Route
If you’d like to make a gift tag, use a small piece of cardstock to write the recipient’s name and add it to your copper loop. In my case, I just glued an extra felt leaf in place and wrote on it with a Sharpie marker. Then, you can either cut a piece of ribbon to tie the tag to a gift bag or bottle of wine…OR, you can just slip the entire copper loop around a piece of ribbon before you wrap it around your package. That’s what I did here and I love how it almost looks like a belt buckle on your present…plus, the mix of copper and plaid is really festive!
I love DIYs, but especially at this time of year, they have to be easy and functional. This fun craft serves dual purposes and it comes together in a flash. Happy Gifting, Friends!
