On Trend: Industrial Chic Bathrooms
Sinkology is proud to present Kristan Allen, our design expert and guest blogger who runs the @FarmhouseRedefined Instagram. Kristan is here to share some design ideas and inspiration around designing your home around your copper sink.
Industrial style has come onto the scene in a big way over the last few years and I’m not complaining one bit! I think of industrial style as a chameleon –it fits in well with a variety of other décor styles and it’s easy to put your own personal spin on it. I especially love the
industrial look in bathrooms…I mean, it’s one of the workhorse rooms in your house, so why not give it a little edge? I rounded up a few of my favorite industrial bathroom looks below!
Mixed Materials
Mixing materials is one of the hallmarks of industrial style and one of the trendy ways todo that is with concrete countertops. They add an understated look and gritty texture to a room and you can dress them up or down, depending on your style. I’m really loving the earthy concrete mixed with glam brass accents in this bathroom shot by Travis Richardson via Domino.
Copper can pretty much charm its way into any décor style, but it’s an especially great way to play up the earthy elements of industrial style. The warm tones and hammered finish make it the perfect accent for a sink or even a bathtub. This Euclid Copper Bathtub by Sinkology marries industrial chic with classic slipper tub lines. Kinda makes you want to jump right in, doesn’t it?
Simple Functionality
No shocker here – functionality is at the heart of the industrial look. Clean, simple lines and design that shows up ready to work. For me, when it comes to bathrooms, “industrial” oftentimes translates to more of an apothecary feel. These Pottery Barn Hewitt Pivot Mirrors remind me of an old-time medicine cabinet and they coordinate so well with the minimal look of the open sink bases.
Warehouse Elements
I mentioned apothecary style already, but a lot of the industrial pieces we’re seeing now draw their inspiration from factories and warehouses of old. Think rivets, aged metal and wire cage. I love the mix in this bathroom by Jodi Foster Design. The clean, white subway tile and sink are offset by the riveted sink base and mirror. And while those cage lights are small in size, they’re mighty in style. They were the first things my eye was drawn to in this shot!
Speaking of lights – lighting is one of my favorite ways to make a statement in a room. This image from Decoholic immediately stopped my scrolling finger in its tracks. Those lights look like they came straight from an old theater or something, don’t they? I love the way they’re arranged to shine down on the raw wood vanity. The open cubbies are another great nod to functionality…and prove that towels can double as décor!
Lots of Room for DIY
Another great reason to love industrial style is that there are plenty of DIY opportunities! I’ve seen a lot of variations on pipe shelving and I’m always amazed at how great these projects turn out. Check out this tutorial from Chris Loves Julia. They put together a small DIY shelf perfect for a bathroom. You could even spin off of this project and create towel bars!
I found another great DIY for an industrial light – yes, you can DIY your own chandelier – using brass or copper tubing. I’m not going to lie…electrical work scares me. But this tutorial by One Kings Lane via Apartment Therapy looks pretty easy and the end result is amazing! This light has an industrial meets mid-century mod kind of feel and I’m digging it.
